In any yacht club bar you will hear this one discussed with excellent arguments on both sides. My take is this. which one works best is dependent on: Boat, sails, wind, wave, crew, racing or cruising and a few other factors. The point i wish to make is stay fluid in your thinking. To say playing the angles is always better is to close yourself off to opportunity.
Try something new or different. Expose your crew to new techniques, gear, and ways of reading the boat. i have always said to students and other sailors "Be quite, listen to the boat it will tell you what it wants" Thanks for listening to my 2 cents
